Our founding leaders

Avataq’s storied past is illuminated by legendary Inuit leaders.

Daniel Weetaluktuk, an Inukjuak native, sparked Nunavik’s archaeological awakening in the 1970s, leading to Avataq’s Archaeology Department in 1985.

Taamusi Qumaq, a pivotal Elder at the 1981 Elders’ Conference, advocated for Inuktitut preservation, shaping Avataq’s cultural mandate.

Zebedee Nungak, a founding figure, contributed to Avataq’s early vision, emphasizing Inuit self-determination.

Charlie Arngak, another key Elder, guided Avataq’s archival efforts, ensuring oral histories endure.

Isaccie Padlayat, Avataq Board Member from 1995 to 2009.

These trailblazers, alongside today’s leaders, ensure Avataq remains a beacon of Inuit heritage, bridging past and future.
