Local Cultural Committees
The Local Cultural Committees (LCCs) were born from a vision shared by Inuit Elders at the 1998 Aupaluk Elders Conference, calling for the preservation of Inuit culture and language.
§ How the committees grew
2001-03
From 2001 to 2003, Lizzie Kulula was hired to tour Nunavik’s communities, planting the seeds for this vision.
2004
By 2004, a dynamic Regional Coordinator stepped in
2005
In 2005, Avataq partnered with the Kativik Regional Government to manage and support these committees.
2007
Every community—including Chisasibi—boasted its own vibrant LCC.
LCCs serve as vital links bridging Elders and youth through local projects that teach traditional skills and celebrate Inuktitut.
§ Language Department
To strengthen these efforts, three Local Cultural Development Agents were hired to revitalize and streamline committee activities, incorporated into Avataq’s Language Department.

Together, we keep Inuit heritage vibrant and thriving for future generations.
