Museology
Avataq’s Museology Department is dedicated to preserving, promoting, and sharing Nunavik’s rich Inuit heritage. Established following the 1981 Elders’ Conference, our mission is to safeguard and promote our culture, stories, and belongings for present and future generations.
Preserving Inuit culture.
Since 2009, Avataq’s Museology Department has operated from Qarmaq in Montreal, a museum-grade facility designed for conservation, research, and community engagement. This vibrant space welcomes Nunavimmiut, artists, students, and Elders by appointment to connect with the collections.

We care for Inuit belongings, works of art and cultural treasures with respect and responsibility by ensuring the proper management, development, and documentation of Nunavik collections for current and future generations. We support the museums, cultural centres and many community-led initiatives of Nunavik, which are essential places for sustaining and transmitting our culture. We also share them throughout Nunavik, across Canada, and beyond through exhibitions, loans, publications, and educational activities.
